Paul Lyman – described by VeryVeryWrongIndeed boss Tim Sheridan as “fucking awesome, bordering on the supernatural” – talks us through Tozer/Witchcraft, his double A-side for the label…
Paul Lyman
Tozer/Witchcraft
Describe the record in five words.
Big, fat, dark and beefy.
What is it about this record that will appeal to the fans?
With any of the music that I make or play, I always try to be that bit different. As you can see from the different range of artists supporting this release you can drop this into any type of set and it will still work. The tech house/house parties have been going pretty crazy for the big piano riff in Tozer, while Witchcraft is more for the cooler darker parties.
How does it differ from your last release?
Over the past few months I have been releasing a fair few breaks and techno tracks. This EP is more on the tech house side of things. But I’d still say it’s hard to tie this EP down to a certain genre which is exactly what I like to do with my sound.
What was the inspiration for this release?
This EP for VeryVeryWrongIndeed had to be VeryVeryWrongIndeed. I wanted to capture the minimal, deep sound that the label releases, while at the same time keeping my own sound, which is very important to me. It’s too easy to produce a track that’s exactly the right sound for a certain label – and if you’re not careful you can spend too much time worrying about what the label wants and lose the sound you believe in. I’ve been very passionate about getting a release on VeryVeryWrongIndeed so I had to spend a lot of time thinking how I could get onto this label without losing my direction.
If you had the chance to play this in any club, which would it be?
There are so many good quality parties out there at the minute, it’s hard to choose just one. People are so wrapped up in the fact that the club scene is dead, and that’s a load of bollocks. This comes from people who don’t venture out of their own city. My preference has to be outdoor festivals – can’t beat any outdoor party playing the sunrise set, playing the exact music that you believe in. It’s all about the music that I can play and the crowd for me, rather than the “brand” of the party.
