The rising New York star talks to us about his excellent debut album Armies Of The Night for Josh Wink’s Ovum, as he plays live at No Sleep in Glasgow…
Debut albums like Armies Of The Night are a hard thing to come by.Dripping with atmosphere, brimming with innovation and alive with infectious sounds, this album is likely to be the envy of many a producer. It’s also likely to be the start of a glittering career for young New York producer MANIK.
Don’t be fooled by his baby-faced looks – MANIK is a producer whose youth hides a talent worthy of a seasoned veteran. There aren’t many producers out there who could take such a wide range of influences – from the 80s through to the present day – and combine them into as lush a tapestry as Armies Of The Night. And through it all runs a link to the 1979 cult movie The Warriors, a tale of a framed gang on the run for their lives in a stylised New York. It’s not your everyday album. So kudos to Josh Wink for signing it to Ovum. And kudos to Glasgow’s excellent No Sleep crew for booking MANIK before any one else.
Here’s the producer himself, playing live for No Sleep at La Cheetah club in Glasgow, and talking about Armies Of The Night and the inspiration behind it…
