Jonny White and Kenny Glasgow storm Tic Tac Toe in Glasgow and talk about their long-awaited debut album, The Drawing Board, their sudden rise to stardom, and their unique sound – known to some as gunk…
Albums like The Drawing Board don’t come along often. Yes, there are plenty of hyped albums appearing on the virtual shelves month after month, but very few actually live up to that hype. Art Department’s debut does. And that can only mean more time in the spotlight for Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White. The duo are already coming to grips with sudden fame – despite the fact that collectively they’ve been making music for more than three decades – having been catapulted into the limelight on a wave of musical excellence that contains the likes of Soul Clap, Wolf+Lamb and Damian Lazarus’s Crosstown Rebels imprint. This bunch seems to have a new way of looking at house music – and this is capturing the hearts and minds of music fans all over the world. So when it was announced that The Drawing Board was in the works, fans of the boys’ debut single, Without You, started going nuts.
Well, the album’s here now, and it’s a thing of excellence. So when Kenny and Jonny dropped into Glasgow to play Tic Tac Toe, we had to collar them for a chat. So here are Art Department playing out, and talking about their sound, the album and its home on Crosstown Rebels (rather than Jonny’s own No.19 Music), Daft Punk and their new genre, gunk…
