A Guy Called Gerald

We catch the pioneering producer in action as he plays out for Animal Farm at the Sub Club in Glasgow…

There are seminal tracks, and then there are tunes like Voodoo Ray, a record which, without exaggerating, you can say helped to create the whole house scene. So it was a bit of an honour to be able to catch the man behind the music, Gerald Simpson, playing such an influential slice of house culture in the surrounds of our favourite venue, the Sub Club. Of course, A Guy Called Gerald and Voodoo Ray are often mentioned in the same breath, but there’s so much more to Gerald’s catalogue than that one  track. He’s spent the last couple of years dropping tunes on labels such as Perlon, Beatstreet and Sender, while last year’s album Tronic Jazz: The Berlin Sessions showed off his unique vision of techno. We talked to Gerald before his set for the ever-reliable Animal Farm to find out more about his music and to get the lowdown on his live show – before catching him in action, playing out the timeless classic that will always be his signature tune…
