Gadi Mizrahi of the mighty New York duo Wolf+Lamb delivers an MP3 mix and talks to ROB CHADWICK about the debut W+L debut album and their forthcoming projects…
They’ve been bubbling away on the underground in New York for nigh on a decade, but the last two years or so have seen Zev Eisenberg and Gadi Mizrahi propelled into the global A list. Their infamous parties at the Marcy Hotel have earned them a reputation as the saviours of house music, and their debut album Love Someone, released earlier this year, did that reputation no harm. Now they’re branching out, with a new label Double Standard, and solo projects and gigs. EQTV catches up with Gadi for the lowdown on what’s going on in the world of Wolf+Lamb – and we’ve got a mix from him for you to download too…
You’ve become major players in a relatively short amount of time. How would you describe the last couple of years? They must have been a real rollercoaster ride?
It’s actually been a pretty slow and steady ride – not too bumpy as we knew what we are trying to do is a major undertaking. But it’s been a real fun ride, growing together as a family with an incredible network of friends and supporters all over the world.
Being placed as the third best label in world this past year must be pretty cool too…
It’s a big responsibility and has made us all the more aware of the effect and influence that comes with it. It definitely inspired us to push further and make good use of it. And it’s cool too, yes.
You’ve both spent some time apart this year, with productions, new labels and DJing. What can you tell us about the productions and the new label you’ve started up?
The new label, Double Standard, is doing well. We’re up to our fourth release already, and we’re very proud of the range of music on there, as well as the response it’s had. We knew that starting a vinyl-only label would come with certain struggles, but we’re up for the challenge.
At the start of the summer you released you debut album Love Someone. What was it like creating a full-length piece?
It’s more of a broad-range, best of album. We’re both all over the place musically in our influences and our output, and there was no point in trying to cram it into any style of narrative. We’re both thankful for the time in the studio we have together and prefer to just let go and see what comes out. We were both thrilled with what came out. Maybe for our next album we’ll try to make more of a cohesive story… or not.
Are their any tracks on the album that stand out for you?
The Mock & Toof edit is a cool style we’ve been exploring for some time now, and we’re very pleased with it. And Love Someone is a real down and dirty disco edit sampled from old vinyl that was a nice one-shot live recording, something we don’t generally do.
You hold a residency at the amazing Miami venue Electric Pickle. What do you love about the club?
Wolf + Lamb, the Pickle promoters PLOT Crew and the owner hit it off really well from the first time we threw a party together. The space is perfect, and the DIY attitude is exactly how we feel most comfortable. The first time I played there the owner was so delighted, he said: “I’ve been trying to teach this crowd disco and deeper house stuff for a while, but this is the first time someone pulled it off all night with such a great reaction from the crowd.” The Pickle usually does something special when W+L play, like decorating the place with deer antlers behind the DJ booth like the Marcy has. Now we’re considering spending this winter in Miami and holding a residency at the Pickle.
Have you had any special highlights there?
A gig I played there last year for PLOT was one of my best to date, we kept going till the morning where we (me and the owner Will) ended up tag teaming on the decks and behind the bar. It seems as though the celebration never ends when we join forces. I’m looking forward to another great year with them.
