Mash – exclusive Substanz mix

Ahead of his slot at the Substanz Kelburn Party at the Arches in Glasgow on September 3, Mash delivers a belter of a mix to get you in the mood…

September 3 sees Glasgow party Substanz hosting a special party at the Arches with a stellar line-up that includes Clive Henry (formerly of Peace Division), fast-rising star Subb-an, Soma favourites Silicone Soul, Chris Duckenfield aka Swag, and Glasgow Underground’s Mash. Of course, to many in the city, the Substanz boys are known for their secretive afterparties, so this foray into the Arches promises to be something special.

To get us in the mood, Mash – aka Martyn Henderson – has put together a tasty little mix featuring the likes of Tanner Ross, Maya Jane Coles, Subb-an, Harvey McKay, Deep Space Orchestra, Silicone Soul and Tom Middleton. LOUISE DEVLIN caught up with him to find out more…

Mash Substanz mix

What’s on the mix?
When I made the mix at the radio studio where I work at Capital FM, I had an idea beforehand of what tracks I wanted in there, and I used the ones that rock my boat. I’ve mixed tracks people can party to, and it took me an hour to do the set with my decks, laptop and mixer. Making it I was thinking about getting the flow right so I didn’t use everything I had planned on, only because that way I get it to sound like it’s a live DJ set. It’s great to have so many amazing tracks in there – from labels like 2020Vision with Maya Jane Coles and Crosstown Rebels with Inxec vs Droog – and tracks from the top DJs who are playing at the event. I also have my own track in there too, Horn of Africa.

How has your work changed since you started out?
Well, I was cleaning out some stuff recently at home and I found some tapes with my old recordings on them from when I worked on a radio show at a hospital ward about 20 years ago. I haven’t got round to listening to them yet – although I dare say I will at some point – because even though I was buying decent house and techno records at the time, there is some stuff I look back on that I had as a kid and cringe. There are probably some amazing tracks from back then, but some won’t be. Music has moved on so much from those days simply because of the technology.

What are your thoughts on the Glasgow scene?
Substanz has a sussed out line-up for The Arches gig and I’m really looking forward to the artists who are playing there – Clive Henry, Subb-an, Chris Duckenfield and Silicone Soul. Plus the sound system at the venue is brilliant. But the way DJs are working across the board – whether it’s Optimo working with Melting Pot, or Sunday Circus with Soma – is like a breath of fresh air. I think the scene has changed in a big way as people are open to a lot more music and styles. It used to be that someone judged someone by what they wore and associated that with the music they listened to. For instance a guy wearing a baseball cap was assumed to just like hip hop. But things aren’t as strict as that anymore, and I find that healthy.

What are you listening to at the moment?
Right now I love the work from The Revenge, Numbers and Milton Jackson. Glasgow and Scotland have a lot of great electronic music to offer and I feel privileged to be a part of that. But I also appreciate the diversity on offer from artists from different genres – and don’t think that just because I play house and techno I only have to listen to music from those genres. There’s also a lot of great dubstep out there that I like to listen to. Working as a radio DJ means I get sent music from promoters all the time so I’m getting to hear a wide variety of stuff. Yet in the electronic music scene I think there is a full circle being made as house music from 10 years ago seems to making a comeback. And it’s just amazing that there are so many collaborations happening.
